For three years, Minds Matter Colorado students spend their Monday evenings working toward an extraordinary goal.
Alongside their mentors, they strengthen their academic skills, prepare for standardized tests, explore colleges and careers, spend summers on college campuses across the country, complete applications and scholarships, and ultimately decide where to take their next step.
Then, finally, they arrive.
But arriving at college brings a new set of challenges and skills to navigate.
For students navigating college, particularly those who are the first in their families to do so, the years that follow bring an entirely new set of questions. How do I navigate financial aid each year? What happens if I’m struggling in a class? Where do I go for support? How do I find community on campus? How do I begin building a professional network or finding internships?
These questions are helping shape the next phase of Minds Matter Colorado’s work: College & Career Success.
Extending the Continuum of Support
College & Career Success builds on the foundation students develop during their three years in Minds Matter Colorado while extending our commitment beyond high school graduation.
Some of that work already begins well before students arrive on campus.
Each summer, MMCO students have the opportunity to attend college programs across the country. Living in residence halls, taking classes, meeting new people, and experiencing campus life gives students an invaluable opportunity to explore not simply where they can get into college, but where they can see themselves thriving.
MMCO helps make those experiences accessible by supporting summer program costs, travel, and stipends for everyday expenses. As seniors prepare to graduate, each also receives a $500 micro-scholarship to help with the many expenses that accompany the transition to college.
Increasingly, however, we want our support to continue after move-in day.
What College Success Can Look Like
During the 2026–27 school year, MMCO is taking intentional steps toward a more structured model of support for recent graduates.
The focus goes beyond simply staying in touch. College & Career Success is designed around several areas that can have a significant impact on a student’s ability to persist and progress toward graduation: academic success, financial stability, navigating campus resources, community and belonging, and career readiness.
That can mean helping a student understand where to turn for tutoring or academic support. It can mean checking in on credit completion and academic progress, providing support around FAFSA renewal and financial aid, or helping a student navigate unfamiliar campus systems.
It also means continuing to create community.
Through alumni gatherings, networking opportunities, and continued connections to MMCO, students can maintain relationships with a community that has been part of their lives throughout high school, even as they build new communities on their college campuses.
Over time, College & Career Success also creates an opportunity to more intentionally connect students to internships, professional networks, career exploration, and the experiences that help turn a college education into a successful launch after graduation.
Building and Learning as We Go
This year is an important step in determining what a robust, sustainable College & Career Success model can become.
MMCO will explore structured student check-ins, semester support sessions, academic progress monitoring, FAFSA renewal support, community-building opportunities, and individualized guidance when students encounter challenges. Just as importantly, we’ll learn directly from our alumni about what they need and where support can make the greatest difference.
We’ll also begin looking beyond college enrollment as our primary measure of postsecondary success. Persistence from year to year, credits completed, academic standing, financial aid renewal, student engagement, and ultimately college graduation can help us better understand what happens after students leave our high school program.
The goal isn’t to recreate the support systems that already exist on college campuses. It’s to help students find them, navigate them, and know when and how to use them — while continuing to provide the relationships and community that have always been central to Minds Matter.
The Next Chapter
For more than two decades, college acceptance has represented an extraordinary milestone for MMCO students, and it always will.
But our aspirations for students have never stopped with an acceptance letter.
We want students to find the college that is right for them. We want them to arrive prepared and confident. We want them to persist when things get difficult, find people and resources that help them thrive, graduate, and leave college prepared to pursue the careers and lives they envision.
